Massanutten Resort WaterPark is Getting Ready for a Wave of Expansion
Rides 4U - New & Used Rides
Coming this summer to Masanutten Resort WaterPark in McGaheysville, Va. is a major new expansion and four new attractions.

Construction on the first expansion to occur at the 14-year-old WaterPark has already commenced with a hoped-for completion date by July 2020. Three new outdoor slides and an enhanced children's play area, as well as a bar and bath houses are due.

The waterpark itself was initially added by the Aquatic Development Group, to position Massanutten as the premiere destination resort in the region. The resort also offers skiing and golfing. The park's existing square footage includes a 3-story, 42,000-square-foot indoor waterpark and 88,000-square-feet for the outdoor complex. Both utilize the latest advances in waterpark attractions and wave generation tech such as the Double FlowRider® and beach entry outdoor wave pool. There are deck and lounge areas and retail outlets, as well as dining options; but the park is looking to expand its attractions and its reach with the new planned additions. Originally designed to enhance resort time share sales, the waterpark has become a destination itself for the Virginia community.

Permits were pulled at the end of last year, and according to operations manager George Salcedo, along with the new additions comes a new request for community involvement. Through February 29th, he relates “We're asking the community to actually help us in the Name Your Slide contest. You can actually go on to our website and it has the information that you'll need,” he relates. “We are going to name all three slides. The winner gets a season pass and a second season pass so they can bring a friend.” Salcedo stresses that all submissions should be made on line, and fit in with the Shenandoah Valley/Ski Resort theme of the existing attractions.

The big new splash at the indoor/outdoor waterpark will focus on three major new slides that have a bevy of classic twists and turns, tight coils of extreme Gs, and the zero-gravity sensation of a reverse freefall on a 47-foot half-pipe. The attractions include a Tightly-Coiled Yellow & Orange Inner Tube Slide that sends riders zooming on tight corners and high-banked turns. Colorful lights will be at play even as the extreme Gs occur, adding to the experience.
A second slide is described – until name-that-slide contest winners are chosen – as the Reverse Freefall Rainbow Slide. This ride will allow guests to experience zero-gravity weightless sensations, taking riders down from the height of that half-pipe to get vertical.

The third major attraction is going by Classic Twists and Turns Green, Blue & White Inner Tube Slide. The working title pretty much sums up the attraction's experience, twisting and turning until riders drop on an open flume.
The kiddie area, an observation area, and new bathhouse/changing areas will complete the outdoor expansion.
The park is offering consumers a saving on annual passes that also feature something new – bonus benefits such as 10% off food and beverages excluding alcoholic drinks at a bevy of resort dining options from The Snack Shack to the full meals at the Blue Ridge Buffet; 10% off all items at the MerchanDice Surf Shop; and receipt of $5 for every $20 spent at Diamond Jim's Arcade games within the same day. Pass holders can also bring a friend on Fridays for a reduced cost of $15; and passholders will receive one complimentary WaterPark admission voucher twice annually.
Currently the Massanutten WaterPark's indoor experience is heated to 84 degrees, and offers a water fortress, body slides, a lazy river float, and hot tubs, as well as what the park describes as “inflatable adventures.” The FlowRider® Endless Wave lets guests learn to surf in a warm and gentle way regardless of the weather outside. Indoor features will not change.

The outdoor park is open from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day. Currently, offerings include the Rockingham Racer, a head-first downhill water slide that offers four lanes and high speeds. The slide is 40-feet in height, and guests grab a mat to race others down 296-feet to reach the bottom. Along with this downhill water slide, another attraction is the White Caps Wave Pool with three-foot waves. Directed at the younger set of visitors, the park also offers the Splash-A-Nutten splash pad and activity pool. None of these attractions will go away or experience significant changes.?
According to Dana Staniunas, the director of recreation at the Massanutten Resort, the new expansion will be a “win-win for everyone, most of all for our guests and for the region. Massanutten has provided millions of rides and memories to guests since 2006, and we look forward to continuing that tradition with these new outdoor experiences.” She adds that “We are thrilled to have the support of the local community for this exciting new expansion project.”
